The four parts of Medicare

Part A: Hospital insurance.

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Free for most people who paid Medicare taxes for 40+ quarters.

Part B: Medical insurance.

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. The 2025 standard premium is $185/month, but higher earners pay more.

Part D: Prescription drug coverage.

Optional coverage for prescription drugs, offered through private insurers. Average premium is around $55/month. Penalties apply if you delay enrollment.

Medigap: Supplemental insurance.

Also called Medicare Supplement Insurance, Medigap fills in the gaps left by Original Medicare — covering deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.
